<image:title>Blog - The Ultimate Guide to Boot Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>You can’t fix these boots. Most cobblers won’t touch them. There is no thread to sew. There is no welt to grab onto. Once the glue fails, the boot is trash. It goes straight to a landfill. This is a huge waste of money. You might save forty bucks today. But you will buy three pairs before a pair of quality boots need a resole. That is a bad deal. We grew up in a time when you fixed your gear. You did not just throw it away. Cemented boots go against everything we believe in at Naang.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Ultimate Guide to Boot Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>But there is a big catch with this style. The stitch goes all the way through. It creates a direct path from the ground to your foot. If you step in a puddle, water will follow the thread. Your socks will get wet in seconds. This is why Blake boots are bad for the outdoors. They are not built for rain or mud. They are built for fancy offices and paved streets. If you live in a place like Thailand, these boots are a nightmare. The rain here would ruin them in one afternoon. A Blake stitch boot is totally resolable and repairable, but you might have a hard time finding a cobbler to do it. You need a special Blake machine to resole them. Not every shop has one. Most small-town cobblers only have standard gear. If the holes in the leather get too big, you can’t sew them again. The leather gets weak after a few rounds of repairs. It’s worlds better than glue, but it is not a forever boot. It is a "look at me" boot. It’s for the guy who wants to look sharp but stays inside when it clouds over.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Ultimate Guide to Boot Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>We start with a very thick leather insole. We don’t use a canvas rib. Instead, our makers carve a ridge directly into the leather. This ridge is called a holdfast. We then stitch the welt and the upper directly to this leather ridge. It is leather sewn to leather. There is no glue to fail. There is no fabric to rip. It is the strongest bond you can create. It makes the boot incredibly tough and very flexible. In fact, in Naang Boots we only use a 360 degree welt to ensure our boots handle whatever you throw at them. Because we do not use a canvas rib, the boot sits closer to the ground. It feels more natural when you walk. The leather insole will mold to your foot over time. It becomes a custom map of your stride. This is where our anatomical last really wins. We build the boot to follow the real shape of a human foot. We give your toes room to move. It is a total focus on how your body actually works.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Ultimate Guide to Boot Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>Stitchdown boots are almost always going to be heavy duty, because they require a very thick and strong leather for that style of construction to work. So, if you get a pair of stitchdown boots you can rest assured that they the uppers are going to stand the test of time. The downside to that heavy duty upper is that it will take a while to break in, but just like with any quality boot, that isn’t a bad thing. But stitchdown has some downsides. It looks very chunky. Some people find the wide edge too big for city wear. It can also harder to resole than a welted boot. The cobbler has to be very careful not to ruin the upper leather. Once the edge of the leather is gone, the boot is done. It is tough, but it has a limit. It is a tool for a specific job.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We start with a thick piece of leather for the insole. We don't glue anything to it. Instead, we take a sharp knife. We carve a channel directly into the leather. This carved ridge is called a "holdfast." This is the strongest way to build a boot.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We pull a thread through that carved channel. We go through the upper leather and then through the welt. We do this by hand, one stitch at a time. It takes hours. It requires a lot of muscle. But it means the boot will never pull apart.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Who Is A Custom Boot Fitting Really For?</image:title>
<image:caption>Because if you’ve spent any time wearing boots, real boots, not the fashion mall versions, you’ve probably run into the same frustrating reality a lot of us have: You try on pair after pair and there’s always something wrong. Too tight in the toes. Too loose in the heel. Pressure across the top of the foot. Or that one spot that rubs like sandpaper every time you take a step. So you compromise. Most people do. They buy the pair that’s close enough and hope it breaks in. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it never really does. And that’s the moment when people start wondering if there’s a better solution. That’s where custom boots come in.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Complete Guide to Buying Handmade Boots - But over time, a few interesting things start to happen. The leather upper softens, losing that "straight-out-of-the-box" stiffness. The heavy-duty leather insole begins to compress, and the footbed slowly molds to the unique topography of your foot. Eventually, the boots start to feel like they were made specifically for you. Because in a way, they were. They’ve been shaped by every mile you’ve walked, every gear shift on the bike, and every trail you’ve tackled.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Complete Guide to Buying Handmade Boots - Hand Welted Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the gold standard for handmade boots. With hand welted construction, a channel is carved into the insole and the upper is hand stitched to a welt that connects to the boot’s midsole. This method takes the most time and skill, but it produces the strongest result. A hand welted boot creates a strong and flexible boot that can stand up to the most rugged of conditions and can be resoled and repaired by any cobbler when needed. Every pair of Naang Boots is hand welted with a 360-degree storm welt.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Complete Guide to Buying Handmade Boots - Stitchdown Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>Another highly durable method is stitchdown construction. In stitchdown boots, the leather upper flares outward and is stitched directly to the midsole. This creates excellent stability and water resistance, which is why stitchdown boots are often favored for heavy work environments. You’ll see stitchdown construction in Pacific Northwest boots like logger boots and wildland fire boots. Stitchdown construction is generally used in Pacific Northwest style boots that are focused on the logging and wild land firefighting industries.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Complete Guide to Buying Handmade Boots - Blake Stitch Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>Blake construction uses a single stitch that runs directly through the sole and upper. This produces a sleeker, lighter boot with a flexible feel. However, resoling is more complicated than with welted boots. Because the Blake Stitch goes directing through the boot, this method is very bad at keeping water out. The stitching makes a directing pathway from the outside to your foot. Blake construction is typically used in dress boots, the kind you wear in the office and don’t worry about getting wet.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Complete Guide to Buying Handmade Boots - Cemented Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>Cemented construction uses adhesives instead of stitching. This is the most common method in mass-produced footwear. It’s fast and inexpensive to manufacture, but once the sole fails, the boot is usually finished. If your goal is longevity, welted or stitchdown boots are generally the better choice.</image:caption>
